Sonny's mazurka (IRL)

Mazurka refers to a type of Polish ballroom dance that became popular throughout Europe in the 19th century. The name comes from a region of Poland called Mazuria. Mazurkas have a accents on the second or third beats. This style of tune and dance came to Ireland in the mid 1800’s, but for whatever reason was only widely adopted in the Donegal area. There it took on a unique Irish twist by keeping the accent firmly on the second beat.
This particular mazurka however is credited to Dublin’s own Sonny Brogan, an extremely popular accordion player of the 1930’s through 60’s. He was part of a group called Ceoltóirí Chualann. Check out some of their tunes, if you haven’t already. I don’t know whether or not Sonny actually composed this tune though.
